Counselling is an enormously important part of the surgical process for both the doctor and the patient. It allows both sides to build trust. § Section 12 Fees and remuneration agreements
(1) The fee claim must be reasonable. The Official Fee Schedule (GOÄ) is the basis for the assessment, unless other statutory remuneration regulations apply. Doctors may not undercut the rates according to the GOÄ in an unfair manner. Counselling without a fee is therefore illegal and will be prosecuted by the medical associations. Corresponding judgements are available (e.g. Regional Court Nuremberg of 02/02/2012, AZ: 1HKO 10043/11). We are also not permitted to refund this fee when services are utilised ("billing" when an operation is performed).
With this in mind, most reputable aesthetic plastic surgeons now offer their consultations for a fee, thereby setting themselves apart from providers who use the temptation of low prices to attract patients and whose true quality of advice must at least be called into question.
We would like to point out that we cannot refund the consultation fee if a treatment/surgery does not materialise.
