Medical glossary

Medical terms can sometimes be difficult to understand and incomplete when searching for a plastic surgeon or during a consultation. Hereby we hope to clarify misunderstandings around these various medical terms and provide you with this practical glossary to help you make the right choice of treatment.

Ablation


Ablation is the removal of tissue (e.g. skin) using a laser - the skin is vaporised by the energy of the laser beam.

General anaesthesia (general anaesthetic)

"Artificial unconsciousness", so that no pain or discomfort is felt under the influence of the anaesthetic. The anaesthetic can be administered by inhalation or intravenously.

Anaesthesia


"State of numbness". Anaesthesia is a medical treatment to eliminate perceived pain in general (as part of a "general anaesthetic") or in part ("local anaesthetic").

Anaesthetist

An anaesthetist is a qualified professional who administers an anaesthetic in order to perform an operation without pain and without the patient being aware of it.

Antibiotic


Drug that is effective against bacteria. Can be used prophylactically (preventively) or as therapy in the event of a wound infection.

Apostasis otum

means protruding ears. The associated operation is ear pinning surgery (otoplasty).

Areola

Areola refers to the areola of the nipple. Areola reduction, for example, is a surgical procedure that reduces the size of the dark pigmented skin around the nipple (areola).

Arm Lifting

The upper arm lift is also sometimes referred to as an arm lift. (see also upper arm lift)

Aesthetic surgery

Aesthetic surgery describes a surgical procedure that aims to improve a person's physical appearance. Disruptive factors can be either unloved contours (e.g. nose, chin) or age-related changes.

Augmentation

Augmentation literally means enlargement, expansion. Augmentation can therefore affect the female breasts (with implants), the buttocks or the lips (with hyaluronic acid).

Axillary

The term axillary comes from axillary - the axillary cavity, i.e. the armpit area.

Abdominoplasty


Describes surgical procedures to rejuvenate or reshape the navel

Tummy tuck, abdominoplasty

also known as abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of excess fat and skin around the abdominal region. Surgical incisions are necessary on the lower abdomen.

Blepharoplasty


Blepharoplasty or eyelid lift is an operation on the eyelid that usually serves to reshape the eyelids and can be performed as an upper or lower blepharoplasty.

Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)

Botox


Botox is actually a brand name of the active ingredient botulinum toxin type A and is approved for use in selected neurological disorders and severe underarm sweating. There are botulinum toxin products from various manufacturers (e.g. Vistabel, Azzalure, Xeomin, Dysport etc.) that are approved for cosmetic indications, e.g. frown lines. The active ingredient is also suitable for other treatment regions, but is then a so-called "off-label use".

Brow lift

A surgical procedure that reduces wrinkles by lifting the muscles and tissue in the area above the eyebrows (forehead) and corrects the position of the eyebrows (usually upwards).

Breast Implants

English for breast implants. They consist of a silicone-rubber shell and are either filled with silicone gel or used with a saline solution to enlarge the breast.

Breast lift

or mastopexy: a procedure to restore the breast to the desired shape after pregnancy, weight loss, age or congenital sagging. Can be combined with a breast augmentation implant.

Breast augmentation


or breast augmentation is the technical term for surgical procedures to increase the bust size by inserting breast implants.

Cellulite

A skin condition that causes dimpling or rippling of the skin, often on the buttocks, thighs and hips, sometimes also on the abdomen or upper arm. Treatment is difficult. There is still no safe method for the permanent treatment of cellulite.

Collages

Component of the connective tissue of the skin. Collagen dermal fillers exist, but they have a certain allergenic component, i.e. they are not tolerated by some patients.

Dermal filler

An injectable medical product used to fill age-related wrinkles or to plump up (volumise) the subcutaneous tissue. The best-known representative is hyaluronic acid.

DGPRÄC

German Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons. The DGPRÄC represents the scientific and professional interests of plastic surgery in Germany. It represents all areas of plastic surgery, the so-called "four pillars": Reconstructive Surgery, Hand Surgery, Aesthetic Surgery and Burn Surgery. Only doctors like Dr Noack, who hold the "Specialist in Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery" ...

Autologous fat treatment

Injection of autologous human fat, e.g. obtained during liposuction, which is further processed to improve wrinkles or remodel soft tissue. Volume lost in the face or body due to age can be replenished. The method only works with the patient's own fatty tissue!

Emla - Ointment

A local anaesthetic cream containing 2.5% each of the local anaesthetics lidocaine and prilocaine. Can be used for superficial anaesthesia of the skin before Botox treatment or wrinkle injections with hyaluronic acid.

Endoscope

An endoscope is a medical device with a camera at the end of a probe. Endoscopes can be used to perform minimally invasive procedures, better known as keyhole surgery. In aesthetic surgery, endoscopes are used for forehead lifts or subperiosteal surgery, for example

Endoscopic facelift, endoscopic forehead lift

refers to plastic-aesthetic surgery with the aid of an endoscope.

Epithelial tissue

Epithelial tissue a membranous tissue that covers e.g. the internal organs and other internal surfaces (mucous membranes) of the body.

Facelift

A face lift is an operation to improve or rejuvenate the face and neck. Various techniques are used to tighten the skin and other subcutaneous tissue with as little scarring as possible.

The general term for human fatty tissue.

Genioplasty

Genioplasty is an operation to improve the aesthetic appearance of the chin and is often performed on a slightly recessed chin (receding chin, retrognathia) with an implant on the chin bone.

Genital surgery

describes, among other things, the improvement of the external appearance of the vagina. This usually refers to labia reduction.

Buttock augmentation

or buttock augmentation is a type of surgery to improve the shape of the buttocks using implants, autologous fat or hyaluronic acid (Macrolane). Can be combined with a buttock lift

Buttock lift

The buttock lift is used to tighten the buttocks either at the upper or lower pole. It is often combined with buttock augmentation.

Facelift

Is the German technical term used for different Facelift - Procedure.

Glabella

The area between the eyebrows and above the nose, whose muscle movement (corrugator supercilii and procerus muscles) often leads to the formation of frown lines.

Granuloma

A small bump under the skin that is visible or can be felt and can be a complication of certain dermal fillers (usually semi-permanent or permanent fillers) but not (or only extremely rarely) with hyaluronic acid-based tissue fillers.

Gynaecomastia

better known as "man boobs". Gynaecomastia can be congenital or caused by certain medications or anabolic steroids to build muscle. Gynaecomastia can occur in one or two stages and can be treated with direct excision or liposuction.

Hair transplantation with micro-graft

Common treatment technique for hair transplants: a thin strip is removed from the hairy scalp, usually at the back of the head, and then divided into small pieces of one to five hair follicles. These micro-grafts are then transplanted into the hairless areas.

Neck lift

or neck lift: a component of the facelift, but can also be performed as an isolated operation to improve the neck contour. This involves tightening the skin and parts of a thin neck muscle (platysma).

Haematoma


A haematoma is an accumulation of blood in the tissue outside the blood vessels as a result of an injury or after an operation.

Skin grafting

A skin transplant is the transfer of the patient's own skin from one area of the body to another, e.g. to cover defects in the skin mantle after tumour removal or burns.

Hyaluronic acid

Also known as hyaluronan or hyalronate, hyaluronic acid is a major component of cellular structures, especially connective tissue in the human body. Synthetic, non-animal hyaluronic acid is the main component of dermal fillers such as Restylane, Perlane, Emervel, Juvederm, Volbella, Volift or strong volumisers such as Voluma or SubQ .

Hyaluronidase (hylase)

A family of enzymes that break down hyaluronic acid. Used to break down any undesirable results of hyaluronic acid injections in a shorter period of time than the natural absorption of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers allows.

Hyaluronic acid

Also known as hyaluronan or hyalronate, hyaluronic acid is a major component of cellular structures, especially connective tissue in the human body. Synthetic, non-animal hyaluronic acid is the main component of dermal fillers such as Restylane, Perlane, Emervel, Juvederm, Volbella, Volift or strong volumisers such as Voluma or SubQ .

Injection lipolysis

Also known as the "fat-away injection", it can only be used for very strict indications.

The products used contain phosphatidylcholine and sodium deoxycholate from the soya bean and are NOT authorised.

The actual effectiveness on the one hand and the safety on the other have not yet been sufficiently proven by studies.

Intravenous

The delivery of a liquid medication or other medical substance directly into a vein.

Incision

means incision and in surgery refers to cutting into the skin

Implants

An implant is a material surgically inserted into the body (e.g. a silicone pad for breast augmentation).

ISAPS

International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery

International specialist society of plastic surgeons who are particularly active in aesthetic (cosmetic, beauty) surgery.

Only international doctors with the specialist standard for plastic and aesthetic surgery who have several years of experience in aesthetic surgery are accepted as members.

Dr Niklas Noack is a plastic surgeon in Berlin and a member of ISAPS.

Cannula

A cannula is a small hollow metal tube of varying thickness that is commonly used in liposuction to remove fat. The pointed end of a syringe is also known as a cannula.

Capsule formation

The word capsule formation describes the body's natural reaction to form a layer of scar tissue around a breast implant. If this layer becomes too thick, it is referred to as capsular fibrosis or capsular contracture.

Capsular fibrosis, capsular contracture

Describes a condition of excessive capsule formation around a breast implant and in some cases requires surgery.

Capsulectomy

A capsulectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the capsular growth around a breast implant.

Collagen

Collagen is a fibrous protein that is found in the human body in the skin, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and bones and plays an important role in supporting tissues and their elasticity. As we age, the amount of collagen in the skin decreases significantly, which leads to a loss of elasticity and the formation of wrinkles.

Compression clothing

Tight-fitting garment designed to reduce swelling and bruising after surgery. It is an important part of post-operative therapy, especially for liposuction. Depending on which parts of the body are involved, the compression garment can be an abdominal bandage, a full suit, a bra, a waistcoat, a face mask, or leggings/tights.

Body schema disorder

A condition in which a person is in a constant state of excessive (pathological) concern about their appearance, often associated with an irrational perception of their own visual self-image or incomprehensible flaws. Sometimes it can even interfere with daily life.

Chin augmentation, mentoplasty

A surgical procedure in which small implants are placed under the skin to improve the shape and size of the chin. Within certain limits, an enlargement or improvement in the shape of the chin can also be improved with hyaluronic acid injections.

Labial

Lidocaine

A local anaesthetic contained in hyaluronic acid fillers or used in liposuction. Excessive amounts can lead to neurological disorders such as dizziness, tremors or seizures or cardiac disorders (heart problems) such as hypotension (drop in blood pressure), cardiac arrhythmia or cardiac arrest.

Lip reduction

is a surgical procedure to reduce the size of the lips by removing a small layer of mucosa from the inside of the lip.

Lipoatrophy, also known as lipodystrophy

The medical term for fat loss or fat redistribution. Facial lipoatrophy can be a complication of certain medications used in HIV therapy. Autologous fat injections or hyaluronic acid injections can be a treatment option.

Liposculpture

Technical term used to describe liposuction with body contouring.

Lecithin

Lecithin is a fat-like substance (phospholipid) and is most commonly used in mesotherapy. It is produced in the body in the liver and protects the cells from oxidation and essentially forms the protective sheaths around the nerves of the brain. Lecithin is authorised for human consumption, but not for injection.

Malar Augmentation

Malar augmentation is also known as cheek augmentation. An implant is placed on the cheekbone to give it more projection, i.e. shape and fullness. Cheekbone augmentation is also possible with hyaluronic acid tissue fillers.

Mastopexy

Microspheres

Spherical particles made of various natural and synthetic materials with diameters in the micrometre range, which are used in dermal fillers.

Bodice

Seam

A suture is the closure of a surgical incision with a suture that can be either self-dissolving (absorbable) or non-self-dissolving.

Rhinoplasty

NASHA


The abbreviation for non-animal, stabilised hyaluronic acid.

Necrosis

The death of cells in living tissue. There are many causes of necrosis, including injury, infection or inflammation; nicotine consumption plays a negative role in the formation of skin necrosis.

Nerve block

A form of anaesthesia that involves the injection of local anaesthetics into or near a peripheral nerve, a sympathetic nerve plexus, or a local pain trigger point to numb a specific area of the body.

Upper arm lift

An upper arm lift is a cosmetic operation on the upper arm and armpit and is performed to improve the contour. It involves removing the skin on the inside of the upper arm and the armpit.

Off-label use

The practice of prescribing medication or carrying out medical treatment for which there is actually no authorisation from the authorities.

Otoplasty

Otoplasty is the technical term for ear pinning surgery to correct protruding ears (apostasis otum).

Local anaesthesia

Blocks the sensation of pain or discomfort in a specific region.

Palmar

concerning the palm of the hand

Periareolar


means "around the areola" and often describes the incision made during a breast augmentation, breast reduction or breast lift.

Plastic surgery

Plastic surgery (Greek plattein - to form, shape, mould) is a surgical speciality that deals with the reconstruction of facial and body tissue. Hand surgery, burn surgery, reconstructive surgery with microsurgery and aesthetic surgery are sub-specialisations of the training of a specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery. Only those who have successfully completed the complete training in all sub-specialisations are awarded the title of specialist by the Medical Association. Ptosis, or ptosis

The medical term for "sagging tissue" (ancient Greek for "falling"). Ptosis can affect the eyelids, eyebrows or even the female breast.

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures in the world. It is often used to reduce the size, remove a nasal hump and achieve a general improvement in the shape of the nose (nasal tip).

Labiaplasty

The word labiaplasty refers to the surgical reduction (reduction in size) and/or remodelling of the labia.

Cosmetic surgery

The terms cosmetic surgery, cosmetic surgery and aesthetic surgery are used synonymously and include all forms of surgery to improve a person's aesthetic appearance. Unfortunately, the terms cosmetic surgery and cosmetic surgery are not protected, which is why some "cosmetic surgeons" often do not have a specialist qualification in plastic and aesthetic surgery. Patients should pay careful attention to this when choosing their practitioner and ask if necessary!

Serom


A seroma is a wound cavity that contains clear serous wound fluid. A seroma can develop in the body after an operation and sometimes resolves itself, sometimes it has to be punctured.

Silicone


Inorganic and organic polymers for a variety of uses including moisture resistant cosmetics and breast implants. Must not be injected as there is a high risk of granulomas.

Silicone gel implants

A silicone implant is the most common type of breast implant, consisting of a silicone shell and a cohesive (holding together) silicone gel. Saline-filled implants are also rarely used.

Symmastia

Symmastia is a rare congenital anomaly in which both female breasts appear to have grown together in the centre. Symmastia can also be a complication of breast augmentation.

Underbust crease

The submammary fold or inframammary fold is the fold around the breast. This anatomical region is often used for the skin incision during breast surgery as it is less visible later on, e.g. during breast augmentation or breast reduction.

Adhesions


are connective tissue structures that can form between organs and tissues during the healing process.

Cheek augmentation

The term refers to the augmentation/enhancement or accentuation of the cheek region above the cheekbone, either with an implant or with autologous fat tissue or hyaluronic acid filler.

Z-plastic


The term Z-plasty describes a procedure to convert a straight incision or a straight bulging scar into a zig-zag suture to improve the appearance of scars.

Implants

An implant is a material surgically inserted into the body (e.g. a silicone pad for breast augmentation).

ISAPS

International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery International specialist society of plastic surgeons who are particularly active in aesthetic (cosmetic, beauty) surgery. Only international doctors with the specialist standard for plastic and aesthetic surgery who have several years of experience in aesthetic surgery are accepted as members. Dr Niklas Noack is a plastic surgeon in Berlin and a member of the ISAPS.

Cannula

A cannula is a small hollow metal tube of varying thickness that is commonly used in liposuction to remove fat. The pointed end of a syringe is also known as a cannula.

Capsule formation

The word capsule formation describes the body's natural reaction to form a layer of scar tissue around a breast implant. If this layer becomes too thick, it is referred to as capsular fibrosis or capsular contracture.

Capsular fibrosis, capsular contracture

Describes a condition of excessive capsule formation around a breast implant and in some cases requires surgery.

Capsulectomy

A capsulectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the capsular growth around a breast implant.

Collagen

Collagen is a fibrous protein that is found in the human body in the skin, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and bones and plays an important role in supporting tissues and their elasticity. As we age, the amount of collagen in the skin decreases significantly, which leads to a loss of elasticity and the formation of wrinkles.

Compression clothing

Tight-fitting garment designed to reduce swelling and bruising after surgery. It is an important part of post-operative therapy, especially for liposuction. Depending on which parts of the body are involved, the compression garment can be an abdominal bandage, a full suit, a bra, a waistcoat, a face mask, or leggings/tights.

Body schema disorder

A condition in which a person is in a constant state of excessive (pathological) concern about their appearance, often associated with an irrational perception of their own visual self-image or incomprehensible flaws. Sometimes it can even interfere with daily life.

Chin augmentation, mentoplasty

A surgical procedure in which small implants are placed under the skin to improve the shape and size of the chin. Within certain limits, an enlargement or improvement in the shape of the chin can also be improved with hyaluronic acid injections.

Lidocaine

A local anaesthetic contained in hyaluronic acid fillers or used in liposuction. Excessive amounts can lead to neurological disorders such as dizziness, tremors or seizures or cardiac disorders (heart problems) such as hypotension (drop in blood pressure), cardiac arrhythmia or cardiac arrest

Lip reduction

is a surgical procedure to reduce the size of the lips by removing a small layer of mucous membrane from the inside of the lip

Lipoatrophy, also known as lipodystrophy

The medical term for fat loss or fat redistribution. Facial lipoatrophy can be a complication of certain medications used in HIV therapy. Autologous fat injections or hyaluronic acid injections can be a treatment option.

Liposculpture

Technical term used to describe liposuction with body contouring.

Lecithin

Lecithin is a fat-like substance (phospholipid) and is most commonly used in mesotherapy. It is produced in the body in the liver and protects the cells from oxidation and essentially forms the protective sheaths around the nerves of the brain. Lecithin is authorised for human consumption, but not for injection.

Malar Augmentation

Malar augmentation is also known as cheek augmentation. An implant is placed on the cheekbone to give it more projection, i.e. shape and fullness. Cheekbone augmentation is also possible with hyaluronic acid tissue fillers.

Microspheres

Spherical particles made of various natural and synthetic materials with diameters in the micrometre range, which are used in dermal fillers.

Seam

A suture is the closure of a surgical incision with a suture that can be either self-dissolving (absorbable) or non-self-dissolving.

NASHA

The abbreviation for non-animal, stabilised hyaluronic acid.

Necrosis

The death of cells in living tissue. There are many causes of necrosis, including injury, infection or inflammation; nicotine consumption plays a negative role in the formation of skin necrosis.

Nerve block

A form of anaesthesia that involves the injection of local anaesthetics into or near a peripheral nerve, a sympathetic nerve plexus, or a local pain trigger point to numb a specific area of the body.

Upper arm lift

An upper arm lift is a cosmetic operation on the upper arm and armpit and is performed to improve the contour. It involves removing the skin on the inside of the upper arm and the armpit.

Off-label use

The practice of prescribing medication or carrying out medical treatment for which there is actually no authorisation from the authorities.

Otoplasty

Otoplasty is the technical term for ear pinning surgery to correct protruding ears (apostasis otum).

Local anaesthesia

Blocks the sensation of pain or discomfort in a specific region.

Periareolar

means "around the areola" and often describes the incision made during a breast augmentation, breast reduction or breast lift.

Plastic surgery

Plastic surgery (Greek plattein - to form, shape, mould) is a surgical speciality that deals with the reconstruction of facial and body tissue. Hand surgery, burn surgery, reconstructive surgery with microsurgery and aesthetic surgery are sub-specialisations of the training of a specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery. Only those who have successfully completed the complete training in all sub-specialisations are awarded the title of specialist by the Medical Association. Ptosis, or ptosis

The medical term for "sagging tissue" (ancient Greek for "falling"). Ptosis can affect the eyelids, eyebrows or even the female breast.

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures in the world. It is often used to reduce the size, remove a nasal hump and achieve a general improvement in the shape of the nose (nasal tip)

Labiaplasty

The word labiaplasty refers to the surgical reduction (reduction in size) and/or remodelling of the labia.

Cosmetic surgery

The terms cosmetic surgery, cosmetic surgery and aesthetic surgery are used synonymously and include all forms of surgery to improve a person's aesthetic appearance. Unfortunately, the terms cosmetic surgery and cosmetic surgery are not protected, which is why some "cosmetic surgeons" often do not have a specialist qualification in plastic and aesthetic surgery. Patients should pay careful attention to this when choosing their practitioner and ask if necessary!

Serom

A seroma is a wound cavity that contains clear serous wound fluid. A seroma can develop in the body after an operation and sometimes resolves itself, sometimes it has to be punctured.

Silicone

Inorganic and organic polymers for a variety of uses including moisture resistant cosmetics and breast implants. Must not be injected as there is a high risk of granulomas.

Silicone gel implants

A silicone implant is the most common type of breast implant, consisting of a silicone shell and a cohesive (holding together) silicone gel. Saline-filled implants are also rarely used.

Symmastia

Symmastia is a rare congenital anomaly in which both female breasts appear to have grown together in the centre. Symmastia can also be a complication of breast augmentation.

Underbust crease

The submammary fold or inframammary fold is the fold around the breast. This anatomical region is often used for the skin incision during breast surgery as it is less visible later on, e.g. during breast augmentation or breast reduction.

Adhesions

are connective tissue structures that can form between organs and tissues during the healing process.

Cheek augmentation

The term refers to the augmentation/enhancement or accentuation of the cheek region above the cheekbone, either with an implant or with autologous fat tissue or hyaluronic acid filler.

Z-plastic
